Heroes in Archero 2: the character system and where to invest
Heroes are not skins. Each one carries an innate ability that changes how the game actually plays — attack pattern, special ability, and stat bonuses. This page explains how the system works and how to pick a main without burning resources.

How the hero system works
You unlock heroes through story progress, limited-time events, and by collecting character shards. Once you own a hero, further power comes from collecting more of that hero's shards to raise its star level, which unlocks its abilities one tier at a time.
The point new players miss most often: shards cannot be transferred between heroes. Spreading shards across five characters leaves you with nothing usable, while a player who commits to one clears harder content much sooner.
Stats from gear, runes and talent cards are mostly account-wide. That means switching your main later does not restart you from zero — but anything tied directly to the character has to be rebuilt.
What each hero role does
Rather than memorising a list, work out which group a hero belongs to. The list of strongest characters shifts with each patch; these roles rarely do.
Attacks while moving
A hero that can attack while moving has an enormous advantage, because it removes this game's central constraint — having to stand still to fire. This group tends to sit at the top in nearly every patch. Thor is the example players bring up most often.
Works in both PvE and PvP
Not the absolute best at anything, but competent everywhere. A good fit if you haven't decided whether you'll focus on pushing chapters or on Arena ranking. Cleo is commonly recommended as a starting pick here.
Crit-focused, single-target
Very high damage once the gear supports it, but fragile before then. Suits boss hunting and content where you need a large amount of damage in a short window — the approach Otta is built around.
Lifesteal and staying alive
Heroes that recover health mid-fight, letting you clear long stages without playing perfectly. Good if you're not yet confident dodging projectiles. Dracoola plays in this space.
How to choose your main
- Look at whose shards you already have most of A further-developed hero usually outperforms one that's stronger on paper but still at a low tier.
- Ask which content you'll play most Pushing and farming favours sustain or crowd clear. Competing in Arena favours heroes that can trade damage quickly.
- Stick with one until you hit a clear ceiling Don't switch because you watched someone else's clip. Switch when the content you're stuck on genuinely needs a role your current hero can't fill.
- Keep backups at "good enough" only Some modes require multiple characters. Two or three mid-level backups is plenty — don't invest heavily in them.
Common hero questions
Can I switch mains later, and does it waste everything?
You can, and it doesn't. Gear, runes and most talent cards are account-wide. What you rebuild is the new hero's shards and star level. Switching constantly does slow you down, but one switch for a clear reason is not wasted progress.
Should I buy character shards with gems?
Generally not worth it early on — shards for popular characters flow in from events and chapter progress anyway. Gems return more when spent on systems you can't farm. See gear and runes.
Does a high-star hero beat a stronger hero at low stars?
In practice, usually yes. Investment level outweighs differences in innate ability through almost the whole game. That's the main reason we recommend committing to one hero.
